How Do I Charge My iphone 15/15 Pro?

Intro

Of late I have heard numerous comments from new iPhone 15/15 Pro users about charging. Thus decided to do some research on the different chargers charging the new iPhone and share. We will have a look at the different chargers available, their specification, and charging speed.

The Apple recommended option for charging your new iPhone would be to use a 20-watt charger for fast charging with the USB-C charging cable or a wireless charger. Now that the 20W charger does not come out of the box with your phone. There are many obvious questions in our minds.

Can I use my existing 5W/12W or 18W charger?

Yes, of course, you can use an existing 18 W / 12 W or 5 W charger along with a USB-C, or USB-A to USB-C cable. Apple recommends using a 20W. Let us do some simple math power watts are calculated as voltage times (x) correct (in ampere)

If you have 5V and 3.1 A (5 x 3.1 = 15.5 W ) 11.5 W which is within the safe wattage limit of 20W.

You may use any charger rated 20W or lower to charge your iPhone.

For example, this means if you have a USB-C MacBook power adapter, you can use that and charge your phone at full speed too. If your MacBook itself is plugged into power and charging, you can even connect your phone to one of the laptop’s USB-C ports and charge at near-full speed.

In fact, USB-C means that you can now fast charge all of your Apple devices with the same

cable and 60-watt (or higher) MacBook power adapter.

How much time will it take to charge using this standard charger?

  • With a USB-C cable and an Apple 20 W USB-C power adapter, you can charge the iPhone 15 from zero to 50% in about 30 minutes, and from zero to 100% in under 2 hours and 15 minutes.
  • Thankfully you aren’t limited to using Apple accessories. Plenty of charging options are on the market.
  • It is also perfectly safe to use power adapters that are rated higher than 20 watts; they will automatically charge your iPhone at the maximum speed that it supports.

Will charging my iPhone will cause significant heating and may cause any concerns?

Here is a little bit of data relating to charging time and phone temperature while charging that can help you understand

Adapter Type
Time for Full Charge(Hrs)
Temp of Phone(F)
30W
~2:15
110
20w
~2:30
105
12w
~4:00

~5:45

The 5W charger takes approximately 5 hours and 45 minutes to fully charge the iPhone 15 Pro, however, if you use a standard 20W charger you can fully charge your phone in about 2 hours and 15 min

Refer to the following videos by Brandon Buch for a more detailed analysis of charging time and device or block temperatures.

Conclusion:

It's ideal to use a 20W charger if you want to do fast charging. You may still be able to use your older 5W / 12W/15W/18W charger. Using a 20W or older charger with lower wattage (W) will have a nominal impact on battery life and will not have a significant impact on heating the charged device. It is safe to use an old charger with the correct cable to charge your new iPhone 15 or 15 Pro.
